Skiing
Sunday River is spectacular, with a top-notch snow sports school. Other smaller mountains in the area are also worth checking out - Mt. Abram and Black Mountain of Maine. And to venture a little further out, Sugarloaf and Saddleback are within two hours.
Hiking
Hiking in the Mahoosuc Range and Grafton Notch State Park is fantastic. There are trails for all abilities, with scenic streams and waterfalls all over. You can plan out your perfect route on All Trails. Be sure not to miss stunning Step Falls. Venture about an hour to the west into New Hampshire, and explore Mount Washington and Franconia Ridge in the White Mountain National Forest.
Swimming
In the heat of summer, there is nothing quite like cooling off in one of the amazing waterfalls or swimming holes in the area. The Newry “S-Curves” are just about 1/2-mile down the road, and definitely worth a dip.
Fishing, Canoe or Kayak
The Androscoggin River provides amazing opportunities for fishing, canoeing, or kayaking. There are also several lakes and ponds in the area that are worth a visit - especially Lake Umbagog to the north!
Downtown Bethel
The town of Bethel is lovely - grab breakfast, a nice cup of coffee, and enjoy browsing the local art and antique shops in town! The Maine Mineral & Gem Museum is also in town, and the Gem Theater or River Lanes bowling are great rainy day activities.
Dining
Newry and Bethel have a variety of great eats. To name a few - Matterhorn Ski Bar, Steam Mill Brewing, Mountain Social, Crossroads Diner, Bethel Sugar Shake, Gemini Bakery, Butcher Burger, the Pie Hole, Good Food (and sometimes BBQ), Barking Dawg, and the Foggy Goggle and some other great options at Sunday River Resort too. They’re all amazing!
